Feeling Properly Exposed

This is one of those days when it's difficult to summon optimism, and difficult to answer the question, "Why do I follow the Boston Red Sox?"

In the excellent Letters to Wendy's, Joe Wenderoth writes in a letter dated December 26, 1996:

A sort of hell-garden would be useful.… I feel inclined to lay myself out in the elements, as though dead, to be picked apart by birds and dogs. It is surprisingly difficult to find a suitable space. The garden I have in mind would be a simple concrete square right off the dining room, and would offer several boulders which one could drape oneself over and feel properly exposed.

That gets at the feeling this morning for me. The boulder is my dream that this is the year. The birds and dogs picking me apart are the loosing four straight in games like yesterday's. Exposure is proper and complete.
